Disconnected

Could you handle being disconnected for 6 weeks?

In the documentary Disconnected three college students decided to see as long as they could go without using their computers. This means no email, socializing or even school work on the computer. In the film it showed the students using things such as type writers and library books to accomplish their school papers. I personally feel that it would be next to impossible for students these days to go without computers or internet. Everything is done digitally from the alarm used to wake us up, to the school work due the next day. In all of my classes my assignments are all submitted online, so I would not be successful if I were not able to use the computer. Just like Scott Bierman, the Dean of the school, had said students are required to use computers to put in assignments so disconnecting completely isn’t likely but there is an electronic addiction problem. I feel that today we use computers for more than what is necessary.

Although I would not participate I do feel like there were some positives that came out of it. Like Caitlin said it makes you pay attention and actually learn about what you are writing instead of copying and pasting. Another good thing that came out of this was that the students were spending more of their time doing homework then they had before.  While watching this I realized that we take technology for granted. We not only use it to do necessary things like preparing a paper and checking your school emails but we get on and browse when we are bored. This documentary was filmed in 2008 and since then they have now created a cell phone with internet, texting, and emailing all at our fingertips. Disconnecting would be next to impossible.
